Today I am going to show you how to make a fun recipe that your kids will love. It’s called Gelato al Puffo – aka Smurf Gelato. This ice cream was really popular in Italy during the 80’s and 90’s. Smurfs were really popular too and we all used to watch the show on TV. Someone very smart decided that adding some blue food colouring to a basic vanilla ice cream, would make for a great marketing idea and that’s how this ice cream was born. To be completely honest, Gelato al Puffo has different flavours – each gelataria has its own recipe. In some cases, they even add anise to it. Whatever the flavour, I have always thought it a fun idea! Enjoy!
- With a hand mixer, blend together the milk, cream and sugar.
- Add the honey, vanilla extract, and food colouring and blend some more.
- Churn in your ice cream maker for 20 to 30 minutes, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Transfer to a container, cover it and put it in the freezer for at least 6 hours or until ready to serve.
