Today’s post is not about the usual recipe. It’s about something more important. I am sure many of you are aware of the super typhoon Haiyan that hit the Philippines on the 7th of November. Thousands of people have died, many are still missing and many others have lost everything. We have all seen images of devastation on the news and I am sure many of us wanted to do something to help out. And today, I am here to tell you how you can help!
My dear friend Tina from Pinay in Texas Cooking Corner is organising an Online Bake Sale to raise money to help the people who have been shattered by the terrible disaster. She emailed me a few days ago asking if I would be able to contribute some baked goodies for the Bake Sale and I immediately said yes. I know how hard it is to see your country suffer from afar. It has happened to me when L’Aquila was hit by a devastating earthquake and then again when various parts of Italy suffered from flooding (the latest of which happened only last week in Sardenia and caused the death of 16 people). You feel helpless and a little guilty because you are not there to help. So, I immediately gave Tina all the support I could.
We have already done something similar to raise money for Japan when it was hit by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and that Bake Sale raised over 8,000 USD! Tina’s goal is to raise 2,500 USD and I really hope we can achieve this goal!
So… how will it work? This is how Tina explains it:
“The auction will take place on November 25, 2013. All donations from this bake sale will go directly to Sagip Kapamilya. Meaning “rescue family” in Filipino, Sagip Kapamilya is the emergency humanitarian assistance program of ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. which provides food and non-food relief to affected communities of disasters, as well as engage in rehabilitation and disaster risk reduction projects. They have launched Operation “Tulong Na Tabang Na Tayo Na” which means “Let’s Help” and aims to raise funds that will aid in the rescue and rehabilitation efforts for the victims of typhoon Yolanda. By either donating your baked goods or being a buyer, you will be supporting a great cause and helping bring concrete hope to Filipinos in their moment of greatest need.
My goal is $2,500. With your help, I know we can make this happen!

I’m sure some of you are asking how this online bake sale works? Well here are the basics:
People who are donating to the bake sale won’t be sending me the items they are donating. They will just email me pictures and descriptions of their baked goodies. This is open to anyone even those outside of the US. Bakers have the option to ship “only from country of origin” or internationally.
Two days before the bake sale, I will have pictures with descriptions posted for bidders to have an idea of the yummy goodies they can bid on.
On the day of the bake sale which is November 25, bidders can bid on items by filling out a bid form which will be posted on that day.
All bids start at $20 and go up in $1 increments. You can go for “buy it now” option for $200.
All winners will be announced a few hours after the bake sale has closed. Each winner will pay the specified bid amount by making a direct donation to Sagip Kapamilya through ABS CBN Foundation International and then, will have to forward the donation receipt to bakesale4pinas{at}gmail{dot}com within 24 hrs.
Once the donation goes through I will e-mail the baker the winner’s address and it will be the baker’s responsibility to bake and send/mail the baked goods to the winner within 7 days.”
Today is THE day and the Bake Sale will go live on Pinay in Texas Cooking Corner shortly (at 8 AM CST) and it will last for 24 hours.
Manu’s Menu is donating a dozen Chocolate Pecan Wafers and I will be shipping them anywhere in the world to the highest bidder! So, make sure you bid and bid HIGH to secure these amazingly tasty Chocolate Pecan Wafers!
Also, please check out all the other yummy goodies that are up for auction on Tina’s website! About 40 bloggers/bakers from all over the world are donating goods! And please, bid/donate/spread the word! Remember, Christmas is around the corner and for many people in the affected areas of the Philippines, this holiday season will not be as festive as for us. Let’s show them some love! Thank you for all your help and don’t get outbid!!!
