Layered with creamy cheese, tender salmon, capers, and red onion, this Smoked Salmon Bagel is a simple sandwich worth making for brunch or lunch.

I had my first Smoked Salmon Bagel when I visited New York at the age of 17. It was my first time in the USA, and I spent three weeks in NYC as part of a school exchange programme.
I’ve always loved smoked salmon, but I’d never tried it with cream cheese before. In Italy, we’d usually serve smoked salmon on toast with butter.

It was love at first bite, and since then, the Smoked Salmon Bagel has become my favourite sandwich. Smoked salmon and cream cheese are delicious together, especially in a bagel with salty capers and sliced red onion. It’s a simple combination, but each ingredient works so well with the others.
It’s really easy to make, and there are no exact proportions to follow. All the ingredients are added to taste, so you can use as many or as few capers and onions as you like. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Enjoy!
Why We Love Salmon Bagel with Cream Cheese
- One bagel makes a satisfying individual portion without needing several side dishes.
- Easy to scale up when you’re feeding family or putting together a casual brunch spread.
- Guests can customise their own bagels, which is handy when everyone likes different toppings.
Key Ingredients for Smoked Salmon Bagel
Bagel
A bagel gives this sandwich its chewy base and holds the soft filling together. Choose a fresh bagel with enough structure to support the cream cheese and salmon without becoming too soft.
Smoked Salmon
Smoked salmon provides the main savoury flavour and a soft, silky texture. Thin slices are easier to layer evenly across the bagel and make the sandwich easier to eat.
Capers
Capers add a salty, tangy flavour that balances the richness of the smoked salmon and cream cheese. Their firm texture adds contrast to the creamy filling.
Cream Cheese
Cream cheese brings a smooth, creamy texture and mild tang to the bagel. Its rich flavour pairs especially well with smoked salmon.

How to Make Smoked Salmon Bagel
Step 1: Slice the bagel in half. Spread the cream cheese evenly over the bottom half.
Step 2: Layer the smoked salmon over the cream cheese, then add the capers and sliced red onion.
Step 3: Place the top half of the bagel over the filling.
Step 4: Serve the smoked salmon bagel immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Plain, sesame, and everything bagels all work well with smoked salmon. Choose a fresh bagel with a chewy texture that can hold the cream cheese and toppings without becoming too soft.
No, you don’t need to toast the bagel. A fresh, chewy bagel works well with the soft smoked salmon and creamy cheese, but you can toast it if you prefer a firmer texture.
Thinly sliced cold-smoked salmon works well because of its soft, silky texture. Choose a variety you enjoy and keep it refrigerated until ready to use.
Cucumber, tomato, avocado, fresh dill, and chives all pair well with smoked salmon and cream cheese. Choose one or two to complement the original filling without making the bagel difficult to eat.
Extra Help from the Kitchen
Remove Excess Moisture – Pat the smoked salmon, capers, and red onion dry if needed to help keep the bagel from becoming soggy.
Avoid Overfilling the Bagel – Keep the layers manageable so the filling stays inside the bagel instead of sliding out when you pick it up.
Soften Sharp Red Onion – Soak the sliced red onion in cold water for 5 minutes, then drain and dry it well to mellow its sharpness while keeping its crunch.
Rinse Salty Capers – Rinse very salty capers briefly under cold water, then drain and dry them well before using.
Press the Top Gently – Set the top half in place with light pressure to hold the filling together without squeezing out the cream cheese, salmon, or toppings.
Variations and Twists
Avocado Smoked Salmon Bagel – Layer sliced or mashed avocado with the smoked salmon for extra creaminess. Avocado also works well with the capers and red onion already in the bagel.
Smoked Salmon Bagel with Egg – Add a cooked egg for a more filling breakfast version. A poached, fried, or boiled egg pairs well with smoked salmon and cream cheese.
Layer Cucumber – Place thin cucumber slices over the smoked salmon for a fresh crunch that contrasts with the cream cheese and soft salmon.
Top with Tomato – Layer thin slices of ripe tomato with the smoked salmon and red onion for a juicy, fresh addition to the filling.
Switch to Herb Cream Cheese – Replace plain cream cheese with dill, chive, or scallion cream cheese for a fresh, savoury variation without changing the rest of the filling.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store any leftover Smoked Salmon Bagel in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eat it within 1 day for the best texture. It’s best served immediately, as the bagel will soften once assembled.
I don’t recommend freezing an assembled bagel, as the texture can change. If any individual ingredients are frozen according to their packaging instructions, thaw them in the refrigerator before assembling.
