Turn ordinary marshmallows into Marshmallow Monsters with edible ink pens and lollipop sticks. These cute Halloween marshmallow pops have spooky expressions and make fun treats for children’s parties.

Halloween marshmallow pops are a fun alternative to more time-consuming party desserts. They’re especially suitable when you want something playful that children will enjoy. The different monster faces look cute on a Halloween dessert table. The individual servings also make them convenient for parties.

I first discovered these little monsters on The Decorated Cookie when I was searching for Halloween inspiration. Growing up in Italy, I celebrated Carnevale rather than Halloween. After moving to Australia, I began enjoying Halloween with my children. I wanted to prepare something fun for the occasion without spending hours in the kitchen.

If you’re planning a Halloween party, you can serve them alongside my Halloween Ghost Cookies. You can also try my Miffy Marshmallow Pops and Pixie Dust Marshmallow Pops for more decorated treats.
Why We Love These Halloween Marshmallow Monsters
- Children can have fun creating different monster expressions and choosing their favourite spooky or silly faces.
- There’s no need for baking or chilling, which saves time when preparing Halloween party treats.
- With just three ingredients and no special decorating equipment, you can make these Halloween treats without much effort.
Key Ingredients for Marshmallow Monsters
Large Marshmallows
Large marshmallows give you enough space to draw eyes, mouths, and other facial details. Choose marshmallows with smooth surfaces so the edible ink transfers more easily.
Lollipop Sticks
Lollipop sticks turn the marshmallows into individual treats that are easy to hold and serve. Use sturdy, food-safe sticks that fit securely inside the marshmallows without piercing the opposite side.
Edible Ink Pens
Edible ink pens allow you to draw directly onto the marshmallows without using icing or melted chocolate. Black is useful for outlines and expressions, but assorted colours give you more decorating options.

How to Make Marshmallow Monsters
Step 1: Insert a lollipop stick into the bottom of each marshmallow, without pushing it all the way through.
Step 2: Use edible ink pens to draw monster faces directly onto the marshmallows. Try different eyes, mouths, and expressions.
Step 3: Repeat with the remaining marshmallows and serve.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Ordinary felt-tip pens aren’t intended for decorating food. Always use edible ink pens specifically labelled as suitable for direct food contact.
Sturdy, food-safe paper straws or wooden cake-pop sticks are suitable alternatives. Make sure they’re strong enough to support the marshmallows, as thin paper straws may bend.
Mini marshmallows have less space for facial details and are harder to secure on lollipop sticks. Large marshmallows are better suited to this recipe.
Extra Help from the Kitchen
Prevent Ink Clogging – Roll the edible pen tip gently over a clean paper towel when marshmallow powder collects on it. This restores a more consistent ink flow.
Avoid Surface Moisture – Decorate marshmallows only when their surfaces are dry. Excess moisture can cause the ink to spread or smudge.
Use Short Pen Strokes – Work in small strokes rather than dragging the pen across the curved marshmallow. Shorter lines give you better control over small facial details.
Separate the Ink Colours – Allow the first colour to dry before adding another nearby. This prevents the colours from bleeding into one another.
Finish with Dark Outlines – Allow lighter colours to dry before adding black outlines. This reduces smudging and makes the facial details easier to distinguish.
Variations and Twists
Make One-Eyed Monsters – Give each marshmallow one oversized eye and a crooked smile. Use black or coloured edible ink pens for different expressions.
Create Frankenstein Monsters – Add straight eyebrows, stitched scars, and a jagged mouth. Green edible ink can give the faces a Frankenstein-inspired look.
Try Halloween Ghosts – Keep the faces simple with two oval eyes and a small open mouth for a classic ghost design.
Mix Funny Monster Faces – Experiment with crossed eyes, uneven teeth, surprised mouths, and silly smiles. Give the monsters different expressions for a playful Halloween display.
Design Spooky Monsters – Use pointed fangs, angry eyebrows, and messy hair for scarier expressions. Different edible ink colours can make the designs more distinctive.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store Marshmallow Monsters in an airtight container at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity.
You can prepare them ahead of your Halloween party, but follow the marshmallow packaging for the recommended storage period. Avoid refrigeration because condensation may cause the edible ink to smudge. Freezing isn’t recommended for the same reason.
