Victoria’s 7th Birthday

July 23, 2014 Last updated on February 24, 2015 By Manu 7 Comments

On the 16th we celebrated my eldest daughter Victoria’s 7th birthday!!!  I know I always say this, but I really cannot believe how fast time flies.  Victoria is turning into a beautiful and thoughtful little girl and I am trying to enjoy these years as much as I can, as I know she will soon be a little woman all ready to leave the nest.  But no matter how old she is, to me she’ll always be my baby with big brown eyes and chubby cheeks!  We love you so much princess and we are all very proud of you!! <3

I have been really busy in the kitchen this past week, as I had a couple of parties to organise.

Like all little girls around the world at the moment, she and her sister are obsessed with the movie Frozen (Plus Bonus Features).  They have seen it so many times that they know the dialogues by heart!  Not to mention the songs… they sing so loud that I think even the neighbours must have learnt the songs by now!  So, when it came time to chose a theme for her party, she didn’t even have to think about it.  And Frozen it was.  Luckily, it’s winter down here, so a Frozen party didn’t seem too weird.

She celebrated in school with her friends on the 16th itself and I made an Olaf Yogurt Cake for the occasion.  The cake itself is quite healthy and nut free… I made the eggless version as there is a child in her class who doesn’t eat eggs.  It came out perfectly smooth and I was very happy with it.  I then covered it with light blue icy-ing sugar and decorated it with a fondant Olaf.

Olaf Yogurt Cake 1 (1 of 1)

Olaf was very easy to make.  I love making “flat” fondant decorations: they are very quick to make and look exactly like the “real” thing.  If you are wondering how I made it, don’t worry, I will post the recipe with instructions soon!

I also made a DIY Olaf kit to give to each of her class mates.  I found this idea on a few sites and I immediately fell in love with it.  You need 2.5 marshmallows for the body and head, 2 mini marshmallows for the feet, 3 chocolate chips for the buttons, 2 mini chocolate chips for the eyes, 1 orange jelly bean for the nose and 2 pretzel sticks for the hands.  I could not find any pretzel sticks, but I was lucky enough to find Pocky and they were perfect!  You can find Pocky Chocolate Cream Covered Biscuit Sticks (Pack of 10) on Amazon.

Then you just put all these parts in a small Ziploc bag and close it with a printout.  I found mine here.

It was quite a lot of work, but the kids loved them, so it was worth it!

Actually the celebrations started early this year as we took her and her little sister to the movies to see Tinkerbell The Pirate Fairy (Blu-ray / DVD + Digital Copy).  We kept that as a secret, up until we arrived in front of the cinema… so both the girls got really excited!  It was a nice movie and we all enjoyed it.

The night of her birthday we took her out to our family’s favourite restaurant: Abhi’s.  She was very happy and ate quite a bit… rice and curry included.  At the end of the meal, the people at Abhi’s were kind enough to bring her some Rose and Pistachio Kulfi with a pink candle!  She was blown away. 🙂

As a present, she had requested Queen Elsa’s dress.  And this was probably our hardest challenge, as these dresses were nowhere to be found!  We finally ordered it (and an Anna dress for her little sister) through Delta Dazzling Costumes but we were told that they did not have any in stock and were waiting for a consignment.  No estimated date on that, so we had little hope to get them in time for the birthday.  We were really pleasantly surprised to receive them just the day before Victoria’s party!  Apparently, we were among only 50 lucky customers who managed to get them!  You can look on Amazon and see if there’s any dress you may like: Disguise Disney’s Frozen Elsa Deluxe Girl’s Costume, 4-6X and Disney Frozen Enchanting Dress – Anna.

On Sunday, we had a little Frozen party with some of our closest friends.  She had a blast and got many wonderful presents (thank you everyone!).

My husband was the entertainer and organised a few themed games.  The most successful was Pin the Nose on Olaf.  We printed out this Olaf and attached it onto card paper… the kids had so much fun!  We also bought some Styrofoam (snow)balls to play Hit the Snowman!  At the end, they also got to watch the movie and sing along to their favourite songs!

I obviously prepared all the food at home!  So, I was quite busy… hehehe  As the theme was Frozen, we used a white table cloth to make the snow and put all the dishes on it!

Frozen Party Food

Also the food was all Frozen related.  I made:

“I mean, it’s crazy how we finish each other’s… Sandwiches” (ham and cheese, tuna and olives, cucumber sandwiches)

All the items were clearly labelled.  I found these adorable food tents/labels here and the the water bottle labels here… all free!

I won’t write a post for the DIY Olaf kits, Olaf Cheese Sticks, Sven’s Carrots with hummus, Melted Olaf Vanilla Yogurt, Elsa’s Fairy Bread, White Chocolate and Coconut dipped Strawberries and the Sandwiches (apart from the Cucumber Sandwiches).

Now it is back to “normal life” and a little rest!  Stay tuned for all the remaining recipes!

Herbes de Provence is a traditional French herb blend usually made with herbs such as thyme, rosemary, oregano, and savoury.

It's a simple way to add extra flavour to everyday ingredients and works especially well with eggs, tomatoes, roasted vegetables, potatoes, chicken, and soups.

Have you used Herbes de Provence before?

Ever wondered why your iced matcha tastes differen Ever wondered why your iced matcha tastes different every time?

It’s not just about the ingredients. Small details like the quality of the matcha, how you sift it, and how you whisk it can completely change the result.

Even the texture and colour can tell you a lot before you even take a sip.

Once you start paying attention to these steps, it becomes much easier to get a smoother, more balanced matcha at home 🍵
