This Cheese Mouse on a Cracker is not really a recipe, but it felt too cute not to share. You only need cheese spread triangles, black sesame seeds, salami, and crackers. Nothing fancy, and no cooking involved.

I made these for Georgia’s fifth birthday party. The theme was kittens, so little mice made perfect sense. They come together very quickly and are a fun way to get fussy kids to eat some cheese. Enjoy!

Why We Love Cheese on a Cracker

  • Makes party tables feel more playful without needing extra decorations or planning.
  • Gives a playful twist to classic cheese and crackers everyone knows.
  • Turns snack time into something playful using ingredients already on hand.

Key Ingredients for Cheese Mouse on a Cracker

Cheese Spread Triangles

Soft cheese spreads easily and keeps its shape on the cracker. Plain cheese works best. Flavoured varieties can affect the appearance and make decorating less precise.

Crackers

A crisp cracker gives support and contrast. Plain crackers with a flat, even surface help keep the cheese steady. Water crackers or simple table crackers are good choices.

Salami

Thin slices bend easily and are suitable for shaping into ears. Very thin cuts sit neatly against the cheese. If slices feel firm, leave them at room temperature for a few minutes before assembling.

Find the complete list with measurements in the recipe card below.

How to Make Cheese Mouse on a Cracker

Step 1: Place a cheese spread triangle onto a cracker.

Step 2: To decorate, add 2 black sesame seeds for the eyes and 2 for the nose.

Step 3: Add 2 thin slices of salami to form the ears.

Step 4: Serve immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can these be made ahead of time?

Assembly works best close to serving time. Crackers soften if left too long once topped, so aim to assemble within 30–60 minutes before serving.

What can I use instead of salami?

Thin ham, turkey slices, or mild deli meat can be used if salami is not suitable, as long as slices are thin enough to bend easily.

Can I use other crackers?

Yes. Flat, plain crackers work best, as they give a stable surface for the cheese. Water crackers or simple table crackers tend to hold the cheese more securely than textured styles.

What type of cheese spread works best?

Plain cheese spread triangles are easiest to shape and decorate. Avoid very soft or whipped spreads, as they may not hold their form well.

Extra Help from the Kitchen

Dry the Crackers First – Leave crackers uncovered on the counter for a few minutes if they feel slightly humid. A dry surface helps the cheese stay in place during assembly.

Handle the Cheese with Cool Hands – Keep hands cool and movements quick to avoid softening the cheese spread too much, which makes shaping less precise.

Use Tweezers for Details – Place sesame seeds with kitchen tweezers or the tip of a toothpick to keep facial features neat and evenly spaced.

Work in Small Batches – Assemble a few crackers at a time rather than the full tray to keep the cheese firm and the crackers crisp.

Check Salami Thickness Before Cutting – Choose slices thin enough to bend easily. Trim edges slightly if needed to create smooth, even ears.

Variations and Twists

Add Cucumber Whiskers – Place very thin cucumber strips under the sesame seed nose to suggest whiskers while keeping the same assembly steps and mild flavour profile.

Pepperoni Ear Swap – Replace the salami slices with small pepperoni rounds cut in half to form ears, using the same placement and shape for easy assembly.

Mini Olive Eyes – Use small pieces of sliced black olives instead of sesame seeds for the eyes to change the look while keeping decoration simple.

Mini Bell Pepper Detail – Add tiny slivers of red or yellow bell pepper near the eyes to introduce a small colour contrast without changing the overall structure.

Cracker Base Swap – Use mild buttery crackers or gluten-free cracker squares in place of standard crackers while assembling the mice in the same way.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store assembled Cheese Mouse on a Cracker at room temperature for up to 1 hour, covered loosely to protect from drying while keeping crackers crisp.

I don’t recommend refrigerating them once assembled, as moisture softens the crackers and affects texture. Freezing is not suitable. For best results, keep ingredients refrigerated separately and assemble close to serving time.

Herbes de Provence is a traditional French herb blend usually made with herbs such as thyme, rosemary, oregano, and savoury.

It's a simple way to add extra flavour to everyday ingredients and works especially well with eggs, tomatoes, roasted vegetables, potatoes, chicken, and soups.

Have you used Herbes de Provence before?
