Italian Red Wine Doughnut Cookies

Italian Red Wine Doughnut Cookies

I love these Italian Red Wine Doughnut Cookies. I know it can seem quite strange to make sweet cookies with wine, but it is actually very common in Italy.

Italian Red Wine Doughnut Cookies

We make cookies and pastries using either white or red wine very often, especially in the South of the country. The wine gives these cookies a crispier texture, which I love.

They can be eaten for breakfast with tea, milk or coffee or after lunch or dinner, dunked in wine. I also like the doughnut shape and they are quite fun to make. You can even make them with the kids during the school holidays!

Enjoy and don’t forget to check out my video recipe below.

Italian Red Wine Doughnut Cookies

Learn how to make Italian Red Wine Doughnut Cookies – traditional sweet cookies from the South of Italy.
Course: Cookies
Cuisine: Italian
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
Author: Manuela Zangara

Ingredients

  • 100 ml – 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp red wine
  • 100 ml – ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 100 gms – ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 375 gms – 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp fennel seeds
  • Granulated sugar to coat

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix together the red wine, vegetable oil, and sugar.
  2. Add the flour, baking powder, and fennel seeds and knead well.
  3. Divide the dough in small pieces and roll them into ropes about 1 cm (1/2”) thick. Cut these ropes into segments approximately 15 cm – 6” long. Join the ends of the segments by forming a drop-like shape and press lightly with your finger.
  4. Coat the cookies with granulated sugar and put them on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
  5. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 170°C – 340°F for 15 minutes.
  6. Let them cool down completely and enjoy!

After sharing the scrambled eggs and tomato toast After sharing the scrambled eggs and tomato toast recently, I thought it would be a good time to highlight one of my favourite herb blends 🌿

Herbes de Provence is a traditional French herb blend usually made with herbs such as thyme, rosemary, oregano, and savoury.

It's a simple way to add extra flavour to everyday ingredients and works especially well with eggs, tomatoes, roasted vegetables, potatoes, chicken, and soups.

Have you used Herbes de Provence before?

Ever wondered why your iced matcha tastes differen Ever wondered why your iced matcha tastes different every time?

It’s not just about the ingredients. Small details like the quality of the matcha, how you sift it, and how you whisk it can completely change the result.

Even the texture and colour can tell you a lot before you even take a sip.

Once you start paying attention to these steps, it becomes much easier to get a smoother, more balanced matcha at home 🍵
