Impress your guests with this Baby Guinness Shot, made from Baileys and Kahlua. It’s rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced with coffee sweetness and velvety texture in one irresistible sip.

When I first saw this Baby Guinness cocktail over at Creative Culinary, I honestly thought it was beer! When I realised it wasn’t, I couldn’t take my eyes off it.
It’s such a clever idea, a tiny drink that looks like a pint of Guinness, but made from two of my favourite liqueurs, Baileys and Kahlua.
Cheers! Or as the Irish say, Sláinte!

Key Ingredients for Baby Guinness
Kahlua
This coffee liqueur gives the drink its deep colour and smooth coffee taste. It forms the base layer and adds sweetness and depth that pair perfectly with the creamy top.
Baileys Irish Cream
Creamy and light, Baileys forms the top layer and creates the iconic “foam head” look. It adds a soft hint of chocolate and whiskey to balance the coffee base.

How to Make Baby Guinness
Step 1: Fill a shot glass 2/3 full with Kahlua.
Step 2: Pour the Irish cream over the back of a spoon. It will layer on top of the Kahlua and form the head that makes this cocktail look like Guinness.

Frequently Asked Questions
A small shot glass with a rounded bottom is ideal as it mimics the shape of a real pint. The curve helps the Baileys settle neatly on top of the Kahlua for the classic look.
Yes. Cold brew coffee works well for the base, and a spoonful of lightly whipped cream can replace Baileys. It looks the same and gives a creamy taste without alcohol.
Hold a bar spoon close to the surface of the Kahlua and pour the Baileys slowly over the back of it. The gentle flow keeps the two liqueurs separate and gives that clean two-tone effect.
Absolutely! Any coffee liqueur similar to Kahlua, such as Tia Maria, will work well. You can also use another Irish cream brand, but the flavour and texture might vary slightly.
Extra Help from the Kitchen
Chill Before Pouring – Keep both Baileys and Kahlua in the fridge for several hours before making the drink so the layers stay defined and smooth.
Use a Steady Hand – When pouring Baileys over the spoon, move slowly and keep the spoon close to the surface of the Kahlua for a clean separation.
Choose the Right Glass – A small shot glass with slightly curved sides helps create the perfect “mini pint” look.
Practice the Pour – Try layering once or twice using water and milk first to get used to the motion before using the liqueurs.

Variations and Twists
Use Other Coffee Liqueurs – Replace Kahlua with another coffee liqueur, such as Tia Maria. The flavour and layering stay the same, and the drink keeps its rich coffee base.
Chocolate Baby Guinness – Add a little chocolate liqueur or syrup to the Kahlua to bring coffee and chocolate together for a smooth, dessert-style finish.
Mexican Baby Guinness – Swap the Kahlua for coffee-infused tequila to create a deeper flavour and a gentle warmth that complements the creamy top.
Caramel Irish Cream – Use caramel-flavoured Irish cream instead of regular Baileys to give the top layer a light sweetness with buttery, toffee-like notes.
Mint Irish Cream – Mix a few drops of crème de menthe into the Baileys or use a mint-flavoured Irish cream. The fresh, herbal hint makes this version perfect for festive occasions.
Storage and Shelf Life
Baby Guinness should always be made fresh and served straight away. The layered effect starts to fade within a few minutes as the two liqueurs blend together.
Keep both Baileys and Kahlua tightly sealed and stored in a cool, dark place or in the fridge after opening. Each bottle will stay good for several months once opened.

At first I thought it was beer as well :)! Never tasted kahlua – what does it taste like?
When my daughter first told me I ‘had’ to put this on my blog and showed me a photo; of course I thought the same, that it was just an itty bitty glass of beer!
I do love Guinness but love this as well…glad you enjoyed it too!
