Fresh citrus, gentle mint, and cold green tea shape this Green Tea Mojito, a crisp cocktail that feels easy and refreshing from the first sip.

Mojito is my favourite drink, hands down. I love a classic mint and lime Mojito that takes me straight back to my days in Cuba. At the same time, I enjoy experimenting with different flavour and colour combinations, like my Pomegranate Mojito or my Pineapple Mojito.
I made this version for my daughter’s eighth birthday party. No, I did not serve it to the kids! This was an adult-only treat, served in tiny shooters. I always like to prepare something special for the parents, too.
Since the party theme was high tea, the drink needed to include tea. That idea led me to this Green Tea Mojito. It turned out delicious and very refreshing, perfect for any party. Cheers!

Key Ingredients for Green Tea Mojito
Green Tea
Brewed and cooled, green tea replaces soda water and adds structure to the drink. A mild green tea, such as sencha or a standard green tea bag works well, as it gives gentle bitterness without tasting grassy or too strong.
Fresh Mint Leaves
Mint adds freshness and fragrance. Spearmint or yerba buena are both good options, as they release aroma easily when lightly muddled and stay pleasant on the palate.
White Rum
White rum provides warmth and balance. A light, clean style suits this recipe best and allows the tea and citrus flavours to stay clear.

How to Make Green Tea Mojito
Step 1: Brew the green tea, stir in the 2 tablespoons of caster sugar, and set aside to cool completely.
Step 2: Place the mint leaves and lime wedges in a Mojito glass and gently crush them together to release their juices.
Note: If your muddler does not fit the glass, do this in a separate bowl, then transfer the mixture to the glass.

Step 3: Fill the glass with ice cubes.
Step 4: Add the rum, then top up the glass with the cold, sweetened green tea. Stir gently to combine.
Step 5: Garnish with a slice of lime and extra mint leaves.
Frequently Asked Questions
A mild green tea works best. Standard green tea bags or sencha keep the flavour clean and balanced without tasting too strong once mixed.
Add more sweetened green tea if the drink tastes too sharp, or balance extra sweetness with a squeeze of lime juice. Liquid sweeteners like honey or sugar syrup can also be stirred in gradually to suit your taste.
A classic mojito glass works well, but tall glasses are also suitable as they hold plenty of ice and keep the drink chilled. Small tumblers or shooters suit smaller servings.
Yes. Brew the green tea, stir in the sugar while warm, and let it cool completely. Store it in the fridge and use it within 48 hours.
Extra Help from the Kitchen
Choose Thin-Skinned Limes – Look for limes with thinner skins, as they tend to be juicier and release more flavour with gentle muddling.
Check Sweetness Before Serving – Taste the drink once mixed, as green tea bitterness varies by brand, then adjust using a small amount of extra sweetened tea if needed.
Use Clear, Hard Ice – Opt for large, solid ice cubes, which melt more slowly and help keep the drink balanced for longer.
Mind the Lime Pith – Trim away thick white pith from lime wedges if present, since it can add bitterness when muddled.
Prepare Components Separately for Groups – Mix the rum and sweetened green tea ahead, then muddle mint and lime directly in each glass to keep aromas fresh at serving time.
Variations and Twists
Non-Alcoholic Mocktail Twist – Replace the white rum with extra cold green tea or a small amount of white grape juice, then continue with mint, lime, ice, and sweetened tea as usual.
Sweet and Sour Blend Twist – Add a small splash of sweet and sour mix along with the lime and mint before adding the rum and green tea to give a brighter citrus balance.
Herbal Mint Tea Twist – Brew Moroccan mint green tea instead of plain green tea, then cool and use it in place of regular tea for a naturally mint-forward drink.
Loose Leaf Tea Brew Twist – Brew loose leaf green tea and strain well before sweetening and cooling, which gives a slightly fuller tea flavour while keeping the same method.
Honey-Sweetened Mojito Twist – Replace caster sugar with a mild honey stirred into the warm brewed tea, then cool completely before mixing with rum, mint, lime, and ice.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store the brewed and sweetened green tea in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 48 hours. Avoid freezing, as this affects flavour and clarity. Assemble the Green Tea Mojito only when ready to serve, as mint, lime, and ice lose freshness quickly once combined.
Once mixed, the drink should be consumed straight away and is not suitable for reheating or storing.
