MINI VEGEMITE AND CHEESE SANDWICHES

Mini Vegemite and Cheese Sandwiches

Vegemite is probably the most iconic Australian product.  Wiki describes it as “a dark brown Australian food paste made from yeast extract.  […]  Vegemite is made from used brewers’ yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacturing, various vegetables, wheat and spice additives. It is salty, slightly bitter, and umami or malty – similar to beef bouillon.”  It is similar to British, New Zealand and South African Marmite, Swiss Cenovis and German Hefeextrakt.  It is definitely a must try if you ever visit Australia and it is a flavour you need to get accustomed to as it is a bit strong.  I made these for my 24×24 event “Come have some Aussie tucker, mate!” and my kids loved them… especially my 2 year old!

 

Ingredients:
White sandwich bread
Vegemite
Butter, softened
Cheddar / Tasty cheese, sliced

Spread some softened butter on the bread slices.  Spread some Vegemite (just a little bit as it tastes strong!) on 1 half of the slices and top with a slice of cheese.

Assemble your sandwiches and serve.

    Ciao bella! Anche io li faccio per i miei bambini mezzi australiani, e ne vanno pazzi, ma per quanto mi riguarda, non ho ancora “acquired the taste for it…”
