I love apple desserts, don’t you? When I was a child, my favourite cake was this Apple Tart and it is still one of my favourites. Today’s recipe is quite common in Italy and there are a few variations to it. Some people cook the apples, others use them raw, some people sprinkle cinnamon on them, etc. I like mine cooked with a hint of vanilla and rum. You can get creative with the flavours here… the final resul it still going to be stunning. Don’t you just love how these Apple Roses look? And they are really easy to make… just read on to learn how and impress your family and friends at your next get-together!
Apple Roses - a delicious dessert made with apples and puff pastry, rolled up to look like beautiful roses.
- 3 sheets of puff pastry thawed
- 3 medium apples sliced
- 4 tbsp sugar
- 30 ml – 1 oz. rum
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 egg lightly beaten
- Icing sugar
Put the sliced apples in a pan with the butter, sugar and vanilla extract and put the pan on the fire.
When the sugar has melted, add the rum and let the apple cook until just soft. Make sure the apples are not too soft or they will break when you try to roll them.
Cut the puff pastry in 5 strips, about 5 cm – 2 inches wide.
Drain the apples and place them on the pastry, as shown in my picture.
Brush with the eggwash and bake in a pre-heated oven at 190°C – 375°F for about 30-40 minutes, or until fully cooked.
When cold, dust with icing sugar and serve.
